Today, as an act of sympathetic magic, I used a cassette-tape of Patti Smith’s debut album Horses to record myself walking all the way around the lagoon. I was attempting to conjure the swan by recording over music associated with the bird while I was completely encircling the largest body of water in Humboldt Park. I am listening back to the tape to detect the swan.

It snowed yesterday and was too cold for instant film in the park today. I shot a video with a pinhole device on a DSLR. Perhaps the absence of glass between the camera’s eye and the world will reveal the white swan.

After almost six years of looking for something I thought I’d never see, an unexpected flock of swans appeared in the lagoon one early summer morning.
